Back to school time is right around the corner, are your pets prepared for the change in your schedule?
During the lazy days of summer it’s easy to get used to sleeping in, leisurely late meals, and long walks on the beach (sounds a little like a single’s ad, doesn’t it?) Starting school is stressful enough without an abrupt change in the schedule as well. Now is the time to get your kids AND your pets acclimated to the new routines.
- Start slowly setting the alarm earlier, until the family is all getting ‘up and at it’ when they would need to for school
- Adjust meal times to a time that makes sense when school is back in session
- Plan walks outside of school hours
- Stock up on and know how your pet responds to ‘busy toys’ to stay engaged while you are getting ready and out the door
- Pet proof your home and/or inspect their crate for safety
- Know how long your dog can comfortably wait for a bathroom break, and arrange for someone to let them out mid-day if needed
- Have a safe location for your kids to put their backpacks, lunchboxes, etc so that your pet doesn’t get into products that may be toxic to them if eaten
- Know the signs of separation anxiety in your pet and watch for them
With these simple adjustments now, the first day back to school will be a little easier on everyone in the house. Don’t forget…the pet that behaves perfectly while you are there may exhibit unacceptable behavior when left alone for periods of time.
